Presentation of the project of a new modern urban district in Plzeň - Slovany

On May 18th, 2024, the project of a modern urban district in Plzeň - Slovany was presented

We are preparing a unique project that will transform the Slovany barracks into a new residential urban district with apartments, school facilities, sports hall, administrative and commercial buildings, square, central park and avenue streets within 15 years.

The Barracks Slovany district will be built according to the latest urban trends to create a healthy living environment with a balanced climate and a city of short distances that will provide residents with key services, amenities and employment opportunities.

The key public space will be a 20,000 m2 central recreational park. All streets will be planted with double-sided avenues with a variety of tree species, forming a system of 'blue-green infrastructure'. In the centre of the area, there will be a set of public spaces - a park-like residential square connected to the school and a town square with a tram turntable, surrounded by administrative buildings and shops.

Inside the buildings and on the roofs, care will be taken to use vegetation and rainwater management to eliminate summer overheating (so called „heat islands“), which affects the centres of "stone" cities due to climate change. To a reasonable extent, photovoltaic panels will be deployed on the roofs of buildings. The heating of a large part of the residential buildings will be provided by

geothermal boreholes and a central heat supply, so that the newly conceived district, is not energy dependent on gas supplies.

The new district will be connected to the urban transport system with a newly planned tram line, but also to the street network with car and bicycle traffic. The centrel point of public amenities here will include P+R public car park with a football pitch on the roof.

Residential development in the new district should offer different levels of standard, from urban affordable housing, to mid-level housing standard, to family housing in villas and so-called townhouses. Despite the differences in standard, all sectors will be united by the quality of the environment and the harmony of the buildings with the vegetation.
